Background of the Study
Government language policies play a pivotal role in shaping language use, preservation, and standardization. In Ibadan, these policies have a direct impact on Yoruba language standardization, influencing educational curricula, media practices, and official communications (Akin, 2023). Standardization efforts aim to preserve linguistic heritage while adapting to modern communication needs. The policies promote a unified orthography, standardized grammar, and vocabulary that reflect both traditional Yoruba values and contemporary usage. These efforts are crucial for maintaining the cultural integrity of Yoruba amidst globalization and the dominance of global languages. Studies suggest that effective language policies can foster pride and identity among speakers, enhance literacy, and support the sustainability of indigenous languages (Ogunleye, 2024). This study investigates the impact of government language policies on the standardization of Yoruba in Ibadan, exploring how such policies are implemented and their effects on linguistic practices in education and public discourse (Akin, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite concerted efforts by the government, there remains a significant gap in understanding the practical impact of language policies on Yoruba standardization in Ibadan. Existing literature often discusses policy intent without examining the on-the-ground effects on language use and educational outcomes (Ogunleye, 2024). This gap hinders the development of effective policy revisions that can address issues such as language dilution and inconsistent implementation. The study aims to address these challenges by analyzing how government policies influence Yoruba language teaching, media representation, and daily communication, thereby providing a clearer picture of policy effectiveness and areas for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine government language policies related to Yoruba standardization.

  2. To assess their impact on educational and media practices.

  3. To recommend policy improvements for enhanced language preservation.

Research Questions

  1. How do current language policies affect Yoruba standardization?

  2. What are the observable impacts on education and media?

  3. What policy adjustments are needed to improve language sustainability?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the practical impact of government language policies on Yoruba language standardization, offering insights that can guide future policy development. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, educators, and cultural preservation advocates aiming to reinforce Yoruba linguistic heritage (Akin, 2023; Ogunleye, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to the impact of government language policies on Yoruba standardization in Ibadan and does not extend to other regions or languages.

Definitions of Terms
